Environmental Services - Nanyuki, Laikipia, Kenya
Situated in the center of Laikipia, one of Kenya's richest ecosystems in terms of wildlife diversity and animal population densities, Segera houses many endangered animals. It is the rangeland of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, monkeys, cheetahs, an unusually high population of giraffes, approximately 250 native bird species, and most of the East African plains game animals (including Grant's and Thompson's gazelles, eland, Jackson's hartebeest and Oryx). Endangered species such as the Grevy's zebra and the very rare African Wild Dog, whose population is now growing in remarkable numbers throughout all of Laikipia, also live here.Segera's mission is to invest in research, listen to the experience of local communities and stakeholders, and apply the knowledge gained to create a sustainable, ecologically and socially responsible retreat that protects and preserves the integrity of the ecosystem found within it, encourages communication, participation and creative expression, and serves as a model for the vision of an Ecosphere in the healthiest possible state.Segera successfully applies the Zeitz Foundation's 4Cs (conservation, community, culture and commerce) approach on the ground.
