Women are not used to feeling safe. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women reported experiencing sexual harassment nationwide. However, only 25% were reported to police according to 2018 data. Clearly, harassment is real and, unfortunately, often trivialized due to its common occurrence. For most people, fear comes along with silence and avoidance behaviors, leading the female population to close themselves to find safety. That said, what could be done to improve their security? What if they were able to report these occurrences anonymously, leading other women to feel safe as well? Luckily, the answer already exists, and it is very simple! Semppo is an application that allows you to report sexual harassment by indicating what happened and its spot. It works through an informative map that indicates spots with recent assaults, allowing women to avoid them as a way of keeping themselves safe. It does not only give them a voice to fight against what happened, but it also warns other people about danger and its place. When silence seemed to be the safest option, Semppo comes to – quite the opposite – expose, share and report. Visibility turns into something possible, assuring women that what happened will not be seen as trivial.
