Shaking Hands with HIV is making HIV a part of history as a disease free of stigma that was conquered by love and compassion. Shaking Hands has the opportunity to• Reduce the 1 in 7 people unknowingly living with HIV in the United States • Reduce the number of new infections year over year; in 2014 an estimated 37,600 Americans became infected with HIV• Improve the life of the 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States • Reduce the number of new infections among young Americans • Remove barriers caused by discrimination facing HIV positive Americans A name inspired by Princess Diana's monumental visit to the AIDS clinic, Shaking Hands was established as an extension of her inspirational work dedicated to making HIV prevention and eradication a topic in every household. Shaking Hands will focus on two main areas – education and testing.. The key to making greater strides in the HIV community is correcting the public perception through education. A community having stigma-free conversations can decrease the number of new infections, decrease the number of AIDS related deaths and improve the treatment of those living with the disease.
