Shark Business is an ambitious project that seeks to use the economic value of marine ecotourism to preserve shark populations.•Our VisionWe believe that conservation efforts are considerably more effective when not based on idealism alone. Accepting that people are more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviours when offered something in return is fundamental if conservation initiatives are to succeed.Many individuals and organisations are working to stop the rapid decline in shark populations worldwide but few of them focus on what we think is the most important principle: Making shark conservation financially profitable.In our opinion the best way of achieving this is through shark ecotourism. Shark diving is increasingly popular and people are willing to pay big money to swim with sharks. By demonstrating to coastal communities that preserving their marine resources is financially beneficial to them, it is possible to change attitudes and fishing practices forever.We visualise a future where healthy shark populations exist due to the contribution of responsible shark ecotourism.•Our PlanFor years we have been travelling the globe and diving with sharks. Between us we have visited nearly every shark diving company in the world and been taught by some of the best in the business. We have learnt how to respectfully interact with many sharks including large predatory species and how to set up a dive site designed specifically for the purpose of attracting them.We have seen that this method of shark conservation is effective and believe that it can be successfully reproduced in other destinations that have inadequate or nonexistent regulations in place.We are currently searching the globe for locations that have resident or migratory shark populations in need of protection before selecting the most suitable place to start our research and begin the next phase of our project.
