Health, Wellness & Fitness - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
SHINE Youth Clinic is a multidisciplinary group from all areas of healthcare education with the mission of collaborating with under-served youth, community agencies and the University of Alberta to address the broader social determinants of health within the Edmonton area.In 2004, a needs assessment was made by University of Alberta Medical Students who discovered inadequate healthcare services for several populations: low income citizens, people who are homeless, people with addictions, indigenous persons, immigrants, women, youth and seniors. SHINE was born as they created an interdisciplinary approach to health care targeted towards inner city youth running out of the Boyle McCauley Health Centre. The SHINE Youth Clinic ran until 2011, when a hiatus was necessary due to challenges with risk management and youth engagement. In 2012, SHINE came back to focus more on community development and outreach in partnership with existing services. Since then, SHINE has collaborated with community partners such as Edmonton Public Library, iHuman Youth Society, and YESS to build on to and grow with existing services for inner city youth.
