In order to fully understand how Shockoe Wine came into existence, you have to travel back to where the name originated – which means going back in time a few centuries. Shockoe Bottom was the center of Richmond's slave trade, second only in importance to New Orleans between 1830 and 1865, but much of it has now been paved over. We have an opportunity at this moment to change the connotation of the word "Shockoe" and make sure that going forward, the name is one that will be celebrated. However, none of that would've been possible without understanding our history – our heritage – our culture. Shockoe Wine is proud to represent the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia and also represent all of our ancestors. We recognize that by founding this label with this specific name, we've already exceeded our ancestors' wildest dreams. And we fully embrace carrying their torch and will continue to pay homage to them through our own successes. Shockoe Wine's success will forever be linked to our ancestors and those who came before us. We understand that without them, none of this would be possible. Our goal is for our label to become a standard by which Shockoe Bottom is defined going forward – introspective, inspirational, and independent. We proudly continue a legacy that is still being written and like a fine wine, will only get better with time.
