Nonprofit Organization Management - Tempe, Arizona, United States
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. SHPE made its way to ASU in 1982. The executive board has been diligently working to provide essential opportunities and leadership capabilities to build a community of determined students to leave a footprint in the engineering field. Here at SHPE de ASU, our members are encouraged to be themselves, build relationships with peers, friends, and professionals, and really understand what it feels like to be a part of the SHPE Familia. Since the 80s, SHPE de ASU has been building upon the base set by our co-founding founders from SHPE National. These pillars are the following:Academic DevelopmentSHPE de ASU gives students the resources and tools necessary to succeed academically through study sessions, study groups, private tutors, and events like Semana de Estudios to prepare students for final exams.Community OutreachHigh effort is made to reach out to the community to educate students on STEM opportunities and increase the number of Hispanics pursuing engineering degrees.Professional DevelopmentThe organization prides itself on its professionalism with several opportunities for members to network with companies, attend workshops, and travel the world at national and regional conferences.Leadership DevelopmentThis pillar is heavily taken into consideration as there are several opportunities to take the initiative to run for executive positions, plan events, join committees, attend leadership conferences to become a well-rounded leaderChapter DevelopmentSHPE de ASU challenges itself to provide a safe space and familia environment to unite members as a community bound by culture and heritage with events like Salsa Night and Welcome Back BBQs.
