The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America - Mobile Chapter, Inc. (SCDAA-MC) was started by a group of concerned citizens in the Mobile area who recognized that individuals living with sickle cell disease had no representation. SCDAA-MC provides programs and services for individuals living with sickle cell disease in a nine-county area in Alabama including: Mobile, Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Escambia, Monroe, and Washington Counties. SCDAA-MC's programs and services include targeted case management, After School Tutorial Program, Summer Enrichment Program, transportation assistance, testing services for those interested in learning their sickle cell status, and community education.As a result of a partnership with the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), SCDAA-MC offers newborn screening counseling to parents of newborns with sickle cell trait and other hemoglobin traits. We offer education, as well, to individuals who have been tested through our association and has received an abnormal result. SCDAA-MC provides the Sickle Cell Disease Educator/Counselor Certification Training Program to professionals working with the sickle cell community. The program is designed to train and certify sickle cell educators and counselors to:*** Provide education and counseling to individuals diagnosed with sickle cell disease and other related hemoglobinopathies.*** Offer education about these disorders to health care professionals, paraprofessionals, as well as to individuals directly affected by sickle cell disease and other interested audiences.
