Sierra Fire Equipment has a long and distinguished history in the fire protection industry. The company was originally founded in the early 1950s near downtown Los Angeles by N.L. Smith and Harry Halprin to provide fire extinguisher dealers and contractors in southern California with interior and industrial fire equipment. Over a 40 year period, Sierra grew to become one of the largest providers of fire equipment in the western United States. For many years the Sierra name appeared prominently in construction specifications written by some of the nation's leading architects and engineers. Many of the best known landmarks in and around southern California and beyond feature cabinets, hose equipment, and standpipe brass furnished by Sierra. The company's logo, depicting a mountain landscape with the Sierra name emblazoned on it was a widely recognized emblem of quality for two generations.During the construction boom of the 1950s and 1960s the company grew quickly. By 1977 the western division of Standard Fire Hose Co. had been acquired from Zurn Industries, and in 1979 Sierra along with its companion operation Halprin Supply Company were sold to a group of investors.During the 1980s, traditional construction industry practices were changing. New models of product distribution, revised building codes, and evolving fire technology caused management to seek a new direction. By the early 1990s the decision was made to scale down the operation, and a short time later the company was dissolved.Following a lengthy pause the Sierra Fire Equipment name has come back under new ownership and is now headquartered in the Boise, Idaho area. As one of our industry's legacy brands, the Sierra name has long been synonymous with quality products and responsive service. As we approach the 70th anniversary of our founding it is our goal to continue that tradition.
