We believe that safety and security are really just two sides of the same coin. Both disciplines seek to quantify and mitigate risk; one for the purpose of protecting people and physical assets, the other for protecting data and intellectual assets. This close relationship has become particularly apparent with the advent of industrial cyber security as embodied by IEC 62443 that borrows heavily from functional safety; for example, security levels (SL0-4) are directly inspired by safety integrity levels (SIL0-4).Because of this we have developed a set of tools and techniques that address safety and security as a whole. The foundation for this is provided by model based systems engineering (MBSE), or more specifically the systems modelling language (SysML). Our conviction is that SysML based safety and security analysis is far superior to traditional approaches, not only in terms of quality, but also in terms of cost and efficiency.
