Signe Rose's desire to create jewelry came from her days sculpting with clay. She discovered quickly that working in three dimensions came naturally and was a great way to capture the textural elements that inspired her. When metal clay came on the scene, it seemed the perfect medium for her talents. She loves making pieces that have simple, strong design elements that make the pieces elegant enough to where to a fancy dinner or basic enough that you could throw it on with a pair of jeans. The clasps and connections are nearly as important as the piece itself in her mind. Construction is of utmost importance. She took many fine arts classes at Washington State University, in a range of media from wire work, photography, painting, plaster and cement casting and clay sculpture, before graduating in 2001. While living in rural Japan from 2003 to 2007, she studied the rich textile history of that culture. The local grandmothers taught her to sew kimono and embroidery the traditional way, by hand.Whether practicing art under the guidance of qualified instructors, or through a self-taught burning need to learn a new technique, the artist's focus remains clearly pointed toward texture. This most likely originated due to her love of textiles, which she inherited from her mother; as a result she really enjoys touching objects to revel in the sensations that result against her skin. She feels it is important to work that textural element into her jewelry. Currently, she is exploring many of these same ideas in a collection of medical information bracelets for men and women. A portion of the proceeds will go toward helping the Epilepsy Foundation and the Epilepsy Therapy Project as this is an issue that is close to her heart. She understands that many people, young and old, are often asked to wear these bracelets for the rest of their lives. Why then should they not have beautiful works of art to wear that reflect who they are yet still conveys information?
