Individual & Family Services - New York, New York, United States
SILVER LINING OUTREACH is a non profit that provides humanitarian assistance to families who become displaced by fire in the NYC area. For seven years we have been responding to residential fires in the five boroughs and providing needed essentials to affected families. Our "Aid for Families Displaced by Fire" project has gained momentum throughout the years and has helped many families through a difficult time. "The F.I.R.E Box" has enough supplies to help a family of four keep a sense of normalcy. The second component of this project is "The F.I.R.E Class". These classes educate and inform residents on the three stages of fire; Before, During and After. Being a small organization, it gives us more flexibility to reach affected families. During Hurricane Sandy, SILVER LINING OUTREACH was able to go where other were not. Getting in between the rubble, through the sand and dirt was what set us apart during the confusion. Our goal is to continue to provide for affected families in the NYC area. We began to monitor Eastern Long Island and Northern New jersey. Fire is one of those issues that is called "The un-met needs". Since fires generally affect a small number of people at one time, it sometimes gets overlooked. Through the years, we know that NYC has more than 2000 residential fires that tear through the five boroughs. The good thing is that not all of them are 4 alarm fires. The not so good is that those families who lost everything, more than 75% of them are renters. Which means they did not have insurance. When it was all said and done, the only thing they had left was what SILVER LINING OUTREACH gave them.
