OUR MISSION STATEMENT:"SIMVO is a student organization dedicated to developing innovative technological solutions to McGill students' challenges through a collaborative environment focused on personal growth and development of its student leaders and innovators."The SIMVO mission statement acts as the guiding principle from which all other operations and functions of our organization stem. SIMVO was founded in 2016 by two innovative students: John Nnamchi and Thomas Karatzas. The founders were frustrated, as most students are, with McGill University's lack of institutional support of students' personal growth and development. Today, this fundamental frustration sits at the core of SIMVO and acts as the constant driver towards our organization's progress. The founders determined that a potential solution would be through the development of a framework which promoted student-driven technology solutions to the issues which resonated most with them. This lead to the creation of a learning environment which empowered students to directly affect change in their community while simultaneously exploring personal development in a variety of skills that mirrored that of a start-up community. Through a recruitment campaign in early 2017 and coordination with the McGill Deputy of Student Life and Learning, Olivier Dyens, the first SIMVO Cohort of like-minded students was recruited. Our organization is currently invested in three principle projects created in direct consultation with the university. Two of our solutions are a direct implementation of technology for problems recognized by the SIMVO cohort, namely: SIMVO Degree Planner, and Simplify McGill. Our third project works in collaboration with these two in order to help consult with students directly to ensure that they proceed in the direction for full adoption by the general student population, namely: SIMVO Market Inquiry. These three projects are outlined with their progress below:SIMVO Degree Planner:- This is SIMVO's most ambitious project. Working with McGill IT and other administrative units, the degree planner has successfully been launched to cater to the degree planner for McGill's Engineering Students. As it currently stands, we are having difficulty coordinating with McGill's IT services to receive all courses at McGill to successfully map out all potential degrees for all faculties. Our current goal is to rewrite the underlying code and migrate from PHP to a more accessible language for students to program in. We currently use Microsoft Azure for implementation of this solution.Simplify McGill:- Simplify McGill is a modernization of a previous wiki by McGill Students called The Unofficial McGill Guide. Having migrated all content to the new server location, this project has room for much expansion and catering to the individual needs of students. We are exploring avenues to have Simplify McGill operate as a central location for all crucial information necessary for any prospective unviersity student ranging from guides to coming to McGill on Exchange to the best places to eat on campus.SIMVO Market Inquiry:- This is a group of students whose specific task is to communicate with McGill stakeholders in order to determine the best projects to allocate our resources. By consulting faculties organizations, clubs, and other student groups they determine the wants and needs of students so that we can cater our projects directly to students. Market Inquiry is also tasked with the external image and brand management of the organization seeking to get a solid hold on the professional connections.
