Fund-raising - Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States
We believe in kids. We believe in opportunity. It is our goal to bring the two together. Our mission is to champion teachers and students by encouraging, promoting, and funding creative and innovative teaching strategies in order to enhance and enrich education in all Sioux Falls Public Schools. Any teacher in the Sioux Falls School District can apply for up to $10,000 to purchase materials not financed by tax dollars. Educators have used grants to buy drones, coding robots, electric percussion instruments, art supplies, light tables, flexible seating options, 3D printers, STEM kits, virtual reality headsets, and so much more. In addition, every first-time, first-year teacher receives $200 to purchase materials to equip their classrooms. The average teacher spends $490 out-of-pocket buying materials for their classroom, and this grant helps to offset some of those costs. In 2018, the Education Foundation created the Student Success Fund to help meet students' basic needs. Funds have been used to purchase clothing for families fleeing domestic violence, provide emergency food assistance, ensure families have access to personal hygiene products, and equip students with school supplies throughout the year. We have used this fund to purchase bus passes for high schoolers, and we offer scholarships to students who want to take the GED but cannot afford the $130 exam fee. During the 2019-2020 school year, the Education Foundation also installed washer and dryer sets in three elementary schools.
