Smart Nuts Group was formed to build on five generations of agricultural activity in the area of Thessaly in Greece, where the microclimate and soil are uniquely suited for farming of a broad range of crops and trees. Following the passing of Theodore Iatropoulos, his three children, sought to explore alternatives to the crops traditionally grown in the region, namely, heavily subsidized cotton, wheat and barley. Tree nuts were viewed as a highly profitable alternative and, among them, pistachio trees were the best-suited for the microclimate of Thessaly. Smart Nuts Group was launched to capture this opportunity and develop a pistachio orchard on the family land. Of key importance in this decision was the fact that pistachio trees live and bear fruit for over 100 years, making this an investment for future generations.
