Smart Fridge is leveraging off-the-shelf camera combined algorithms and an app to catalog the contents of your fridge and automatically create menus and send about-to-expired notifications. Smart Fridge aims at solving the problem of huge food waste. Americans, on average, waste 23 pounds of perfectly edible food per person, each month. This wasteful habit would not just earn a scolding from your mother, it is actually 50% more than our wasted amount in the 1970s. For a family of four, it is equivalent of taking $114 to $190 from your pocket and throw it in the trash each month. On average, a typical American family spends $550 on the food budget each month, let's save 30% of the budget.Our invention is the off-the-shelf camera combined algorithms as well as receipts-scanning by our phone app. By applying computer vision and artificial intelligence, the camera would detect the ingredients in the fridge and label all the storage. Then, based on what is stored in the fridge, we will offer personalized recipes, notifications of about-to-expired food(identify by the time food gets into the fridge or the time of purchase based on scanning over receipts from the supermarket), and smart plans on our corresponding app to develop a home meal planning ecosystem. Smart Fridge would also have functions of adding ingredients by phone camera scanning, as well as receipts scanning to have a more complete list of ingredients. It is technically feasible because we have built and tested our prototype. We are at the stage of labeling food successfully and then use the scanned result to generate recipes accordingly. We have a simple user interface for users to choose whether to make a new scan, generate a recipe, use a recipe, and add & delete ingredients accordingly.
