SmartGait LLC has developed a solution to identify fall risk in older adults, and to provide gait and balance assessments as a marker of health and vitality. Preventing falls in older adults is an important issue, since falls adversely impact health, result in substantive medical costs, and are the leading cause of accidental death in older adults. Identifying fall risk before a fall occurs is critical for timely deployment of preventive measures and to ensure that limited resources are allocated to those most likely to experience a fall. SmartGait LLC was established in 2015 with the goal of developing portable and reliable technologies for evaluating fall-risk in older adults and other gait-compromised individuals. The company is based in West Lafayette, Indiana and is a spin-off of interdisciplinary research conducted at Purdue University by Professors Shirley Rietdyk (Health and Kinesiology Department) and Professor Babak Ziaie (School of Electrical and Computer Engineering). SmartGait LLC recently received funding from the National Science Foundation to support further development of the system.
