Neil led the firm's corporate responsibility strategy development and measurement services and Social Network Analysis practice before retiring in 2016. He was a founding partner of innovation, measurement 21st century (im21), which specializes in the use of Social Network Analysis and mapping and on-line facilitation to produce inclusive stakeholder collaboration and communication in order to accelerate innovation, problem-solving, and corporate responsibility/sustainability. SmithOBrien clients have included Calvert, Chiquita, Gillette, Starbucks, Symantec, Aon Hewitt, Covidien, Duke Energy, among others.In collaboration with experts in place-based social impact investing, Neil is developing a new measurement framework to assess short- to medium-term employee outcomes and longer-term neighborhood impacts of a cross sector of local privately-owned social enterprises collaborating to close the racial and gender income and wealth gaps and reverse systemic inequities in poor urban and rural communities.Neil also spends 10-20 hrs/month coaching social entrepreneurs on doing the right thing in how they manage a company's growth, and in effectively leveraging its social mission as a key differentiator from competitors who don't have similar social/environmental goals and transparent accountability standards. Neil is a former adjunct professor at Boston College and The New School University in New York City. He is a fellow at the Lewis Institute at Babson College.
