You notice some soapsuds meander slowly over your newly washed dishes. They render a shiny and new finish as they sit ready, in the dish rack. A 1950's soap opera plays in the background as if, from a wise, gramophone on its last legs. It crackles shrilly beyond the kitchen door drop-beads. The room smells of fresh apple pie. The seldom oiled wheels of the liquor trolly suddenly squeak from the corner of the room. Sammy's pearly white teeth glint in the sun's razor-light from the window. The Jangler draws a figure eight in the air with a golden swizzle-stick. ‘The Soap Bar, oh my.. it's very much open', he whispers, then places a chilled Gin & Tonic next to your chair - on a coaster with a picture of the Queen on it. You know his face. The tune, ‘Mr. Bojangles'. Your eyes are drawn to an old, worn oil painting, in an intricate gold frame above the gramophone. It's of an old ship. A pirate ship. ‘That was my great grandfather's...' Sammy says. ‘The Pink Concorde'. He smiles Politely, places a small wooden bowl of salted nuts down on the table and hands you an engraved metal calling card. ‘What can I get you next, I am at your service?', it reads. The reverse side of the card is crowded with a smattering of words. Options, it seems, each encased with a hairline rectangle, each citing a service. ‘Barber, designer, calligrapher, fletcher, cobbler'. The list is long. Sammy brings you a beautiful piece of old, yellow papyrus, on a cork board then proffers a black fountain pen and a small inkwell. You take the pen and dip it in the ink. You know now what he needs. He knows what you want too, it seems. You begin scribing your wildest wishes from the buzzwords you can make out on his calling card. The more you write, the more you grow nearly febrile with excitement and anticipation. Could it be, finally? The start of something. Is this where your life sets sail towards your wildest ambitions, at long last? You've longed for this. And it begins now. And it's Because of SOAP.
