The Society was founded by broadcasting icon Dick Robinson for the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the music of the Great American Songbook. The Great American Songbook comprises standards written by George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin and includes influential interpreters like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Vic Damone, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis, Jr., Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and so many, more. The enduring quality of these artists is their remarkable ability to articulate and define an era of consummate songwriting.Described as "America's classical music", the Great American Songbook is made up of the most remarkable and influential American songs of the 20th century. And, even though the times have changed, these great melodies linger on in our minds and our hearts. We must do everything we can to preserve their place in our rich history and keep them alive for future generations to appreciate and honor. The Society produces songbook-focused radio and television programming to provide free and unfettered access to the music beloved by so many. Additionally, we present an annual Young Artist Award so that the next generation can showcase and perpetuate this important music.
