Jewelry handmade in Chicago, IL. Solar Symbols is a means to disseminate the symbols in the Pattern Based Writing System: (http://nathanknize.com/pattern-based-writing-system). Completed in 2016, the system is a collection of 2000 patterns that draw meaning from Latin, English and pattern theory together while keeping the patterns stuck in their written form. It asserts itself as a writing system, not a language. When considering universal symbols, the sun is most simple: a circle. The pattern based writing system was generated from geometric charts; combinations of lines and shapes that intersect in novel ways. I wanted to encode personal meaning by taking familiar shapes, permutating them into unfamiliar ones, and assigning them symbolic meaning. Personal meaning (encoded meaning) is what I encourage you to seek within the jewelry. Each collection responds to a specific situation; real, fictitious or paraficitonal. The wearer can take these patterns out of their intended context, consider their meaning, and bring them into their everyday lives. The jewelry pieces act as a means to convey, hide or celebrate something important to the wearer.
