Born from a love of music Oli Mistry and Jay Hemsworth together founded SoundSchool in May 2010 aiming to use their musical passions, skills and networks to make a big difference to children who would never otherwise simply hold a musical instrument, let alone receive lessons. SoundSchool fund their work through local fundraising events and activations. SoundSchool partner with carefully selected, like minded organisations already providing the essential basics of shelter, healthcare and education. SoundSchool then become the musical education provider, supplying instruments, tuition, teaching aids, and transforming old rooms into musical discovery centres for hundreds of children. In 2010 SoundSchool partnered with Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) children's shelters in Delhi, a street-based intervention program that works to care for and protect neglected street children in and around the entire city opening the first SoundSchool in November 2010. In 2011 SoundSchool opened its second school at the Imbabazi Orphanage in Rwanda, an organisation caring for the orphans of the 1994 genocide. In 2012 and beyond SoundSchool plan on opening a SoundSchool locally in Australia as well as partnering with Classroom of Hope to open a school in Cambodia.
