Nonprofit Organization Management - Kakuma, Turkana County, Kenya
Our organisation is based in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, a camp with around 180,000 people from a variety of different countries (Sudan, Somalia, Congo, Ethiopia, Burundi, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Eritrea and many more). With two friends, we funded through various fundraising initiatives and constructed, a computer centre on a piece of land granted to us within the camp with support from the UNHCR, Windle Trust and Xaviers Project). Two years ago we officially founded the NGO, "Computer for Kakuma" in collaboration with the UNHCR, Windle Trust and Xaviers Project. The goal of the centre was to provide a variety of courses, especially programming / coding courses to enable the students to take online jobs or improve their community with their own projectsWe have a variety of courses going on, namely: - HE connected learning (social media, digital marketing and IT)-Nanodegree (advanced coding and programming degree)-Computer basic (introductory IT)-A Good Start (life philosophy, coaching and female empowerment)-New Africa Media Youth (developers working on an app)-KYF freelancers (online freelancers)-KIRON (online university) -Various other individual online courses that we have been donated by other organisations (Microsoft, Udemy, etc.)In total we have had around 400 students use our centre throughout our different courses. We also helped the refugees that teach our classes and administer our centre fund their own NGO: SIR (Solidarity Initiative for Refugees). We are in constant contact with SIR to ensure everything is managed well.We are hiring volunteers to help with many new initiatives, both remotely and going to Africa, if you are interested send us a message!
