Nonprofit Organization Management - New York, New York, United States
The South Asians for Empowerment (SAFE) is a non-political, not for profit, publicly supported, charitable development organization whose mission is to assist low-income immigrant families of Queens become contributory residents of New York City. SAFE offers programs aimed at educating and empowering community members facing barriers to full social and economic participation and to build understanding and cooperation between the diverse communities. We do this by helping those in needs gain access to basic education and healthcare; by encouraging economic and civic participation; and by empowering our marginalized communities to advocate for their rights by providing ESL & Computer classes, community education workshops, legal clinics, programs for youth, women and seniors. SAFE is a startup organization which functions through donations from its Board members, like minded individuals and the volunteer efforts of its staff and community members like YOU. It was to address the needs of this community - ‘living in need' that SAFE came into existence. After brainstorming for quite a few months and having conducted a Needs Assessment survey, it was decided to open the doors of SAFE for the immigrant community and provide direct services to plug this loophole at a time when almost no community organization was primarily serving this low-income community in Queens. It may not be improper to add here that there is no other South Asian organization serving this community at present in the neighborhood.
