The South Eastern Livestock Exchange (SELX) is a world-class regional livestock selling centre, located at the junction of seven large highways and arterial roads, just off the Hume Highway. With construction set to be completed by mid-2016, SELX will have a selling-pen capacity of 3800 fat cattle and 30,000 sheep and lambs. Due to its central location, the road network and its critical mass, SELX aims to attract livestock from up to 20 existing smaller sale yards, within a 250km radius. In 2011, an estimated 852,154 head of cattle and 7.3 million sheep were sold in this catchment including both sale yards and "over the hooks" (direct to abattoir) sales.
