The South Florida Hunger Coalition was founded by The Coordinating Council of Broward County in 2001. Today, the South Florida Hunger Coalition (SFHC) is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit, who, with the support of dozens of community partners, presently coordinates the efforts of more than 75 hunger-related agencies across South Florida, including Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Collier, Lee, Hendry, Martin and St. Lucie counties. We work to eradicate hunger by acting as a resource, convener and developer of hunger-related initiatives, such as:• The Mobile Summer BreakSpot feeding program, an innovative partnership and national success model with Meals on Wheels South Florida, Broward County Housing Authority (BCHA), Children's Services Council of Broward County and Florida Impact, along with more than 25 additional community partners. In 2017, 81 Summer BreakSpot sites served 21,256 children, aged 18 and under, a total of 176,308 meals, with planned expansion region-wide in 2018.• Weekend backpack and nutrition supplement programs targeting homeless, at-risk and teen students in multiple counties.• Mobile School Pantries serving elementary & middle-school populations.• Community and school-based garden projects.• Food rescue and recovery programs.• Other innovative hunger-related initiatives. The SFHC further advocates and lobbies at the local, state and national levels for greater utilization and access to existing federal programs such as school breakfast, school lunch, after-school snacks, after-school dinners, summer meals, and expanded nutrition education. We provide direct technical guidance, support and assistance to implement and expand these programs.
