Nonprofit Organization Management - Onkaparinga Hills, South Australia, Australia
SKER is a registered charity. We are constructing a state of the art rehabilitation centre in Onkaparinga Hills purpose built to house koalas and echidnas, with full veterinary capabilities. We respond to hundreds of calls about sick, injured, orphaned or displaced wildlife. We ensure all wildlife receives veterinary care where appropriate and work tirelessly to rehabilitate those suitable for release back into the wild. Koalas in South Australia face an uphill battle for survival. With koala habitat becoming increasingly fragmented from continued residential development making food sources harder to find. Unfortunately, this means that they often fall victim to incidents with cars and trucks. Dog attacks are also a major issue for urban and rural koalas. Not only do they suffer from the effects of habitat loss, they also have to contend with the increase of disease and illness, particularly Chlamydia and Renal Disease, that plague the population. This is where SKER steps in. SKER was created to raise awareness about the plight of koalas and other wildlife in South Australia, by sharing information and stories about the rescue and care of koalas. We have a network of volunteer rescuers and accredited carers that rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured koalas. Every day we, and our network of volunteer carers in Adelaide S.A, get calls about sick and injured koalas. We rescue and rehabilitate these beautiful animals and are aided in this by some fantastic vets who often donate their time and services to supplement our own verterinary capabilities. Our specialist carers hold the appropriate permits and are supported by the SA Dept of Environment and Water. Rescuers are primarily based south of Adelaide but work with others across South Australia. All rescuers and carers are volunteers.
