January 1, 2016, Neighborhoods Inc. of Battle Creek begins doing business under a new name; one that more accurately describes the true nature and scope of its work, Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation (SWMCDC.org). The new Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation business model has increased emphasis on residential, small business and commercial financial products and capital investment to support quality of life and community growth. The transformed business model for SWMCDC retains the core program lines of business of Neighborhoods, Inc.: Education and Counseling, Community Building and Engagement, Asset Management and Development of affordable housing, and Residential Mortgages and Small Business Lending. Expertise in affordable housing management and development and lending will provide the platform for the other two program lines. Community Building and Engagement, and Education and Counseling programs will continue to support better informed, inspired and financially prepared families that are needed to fuel the community's revitalization. Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation (a.k.a. Neighborhoods, Inc.) is a charter member of NeighborWorks America, a national network of community development organizations that receives a portion of its annual funding directly from the United States Congress. It is also a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), a program of the United States Treasury Department; a Michigan licensed mortgage lender; a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) as certified by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); HUD Certified Housing Counseling Organization and a Member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI). As we begin this grand New Year, we hope the entire Battle Creek and Calhoun County community will continue to support us as we make our transformation and join with us in this work.
