Nonprofit Organization Management - Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Here at SPAN Chennai, we unlock the potential of the disadvantaged. We believe that today's society does not work for the majority, and it's only through authentic empowerment, in the form of grassroots governance, that those on the margins have an opportunity to be the best version of themselves. That's why over the next four years, we're entering each one of Chennai's disadvantaged communities and establishing ‘Street Parliaments', through which a community's potential can be unlocked. These Street Parliaments—groups of 25-30 people, made up of a representative from each household—meet regularly to discuss a community's challenges and opportunities, and how to take action in these areas. Our role at SPAN Chennai is to be a catalyst for this process, facilitating meetings and connecting the Street Parliaments with different resources and organisations available as action plans evolve. Though out our involvement, our focus is on imbedding this approach to problem solving in people's minds and creating sustainable relationships between stakeholders, moving each Street Parliament towards self-sufficiency within five years.Currently, SPAN Chennai works in the slums of Saidapet, and the relocated slums of Perambakkam and Kannagi Nagar.
