The Sparks began when coach Brittany Gessner, as the cheer coach for Northview HS, and squad members had a desire to enter competitions. The young men joined at the encourgement of the girls because with the guy's strength the team would be able to enter coed competition divisions. The first National Competition was at COA in Jacksonville, Florida in March of 2000. The team finished 6th. Sylvania schools wanted both Northview and Southview to be able to participate so the next year students from both school tried out and made the team. They attended AmeriCheer Nationals in March 2001 at DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida and finished 5th. In 2002 the Sparks became independent and team members came from high schools throughout the area and Northwest Ohio. They competed at The American Challenge Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana and were National Runners-Up. The partner stunt of Nate Pelow and Jessica Elrod were national runners-up and the stunt team of Alex Chalmers and Angie Pfeiffer were National Champions. In 2003 the Sparks consisted of two teams, High School Coed All Star who must be in high school to compete and the newly formed College Elite All Stars that consisted of athletes ages 16 through college. The Sparks are self-funding and non-profit. They hold fundraisers and ask for business and indivdual sponsorships in any amount to help alleviate the cost of regional and national competitions.
