After working for such industry leaders as Ferrari, Maserati, and BMW as well as on both sides of the collision repair industry (Insurance company and Repair facilities), two things became obvious. First, composites and especially carbon fiber are the undeniable future of the automotive industry.Second, the belief that repair of damaged carbon fiber is almost impossible and that the whole part has to be replaced in every case, is not true and could be a very expensive mistake. Carbon fiber can be repaired. It is not simple, it is not what most backyard mechanics are used to when repairing fiberglass on small boats and the like, but it can be done and in most cases is more cost effective than replacing the whole part. Such repairs have been done for the last 30 years in aerospace, high performance car and boat racing industries. The person doing the repair has to understand how carbon fiber works and what gives it its unique qualities. Considerations have to be taken of weave (warp/fill) directions of the fibers, the different directions of the weave from layer to layer as well as the matrix system used in the laminate, etc. The parts can be repaired with great success to retain the same properties as the original undamaged structure.
