We are all about backyard composting! We design, manufacture and distribute the Speedibin composter. An all metal, vermin resistant composter, it is ideal for backyard composting, as well as community gardens, school gardens and businesses that generate organic waste. Speedibins keep out rats, mice and other vermin and they're easy to use. Our goal is to remove hurdles to backyard composting. The large volume, 405 litres (107 US gallons), can compost all the organic waste of a typical household and can hold enough biomass for hot composting if desired. The latching handle keeps out raccoons and dogs. A metal screen on the bottom allows worms and microbes and water to transfer while precluding vermin. The large lid allows easy access for dumping and mixing. Also the front panel slides right out for easy removal of finished compost. The galvanized powder-coated metal lasts about 30 years. A family business, Fresh Earth Products, which designs and markets Speedibins, is owned by Joyce and Paul McMenamon. Speedibins were originally designed by Joyce's Dad, Fred Francis, in 1989. At that time, they didn't compete well with the cheap plastic bins flooding the market so Fred stopped the business. Then City Farmer in Vancouver asked if we would build them again because of the rat problem in Vancouver. Joyce found her Dad's old drawings and started tweaking the design. Now 30 years after Fred's idea, people are loving Speedibins because rats can't get into their compost. Fabricated in Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada, Speedibins are available through our online store and locally at our farm in Merville BC. They are loved by gardeners everywhere including households, schools, co-housing and municipalities. Feed the soil that feeds the plants that feed us!
