To achieve genuine research outcomes that benefit rural Australians research needs to be done in collaboration with patients, consumers, practitioners, healthcare networks and system managers – who work in and know the concerns of rural communities. The Rural Health and Medical Research Network (the Spinifex Network) is a coalition of more than 60 rural and regional health organisations that share the vision of stronger and healthier rural communities. The Spinifex Network proposes that dedicated research funding focused on improving the health of rural communities is needed, with those who run and operate research studies in our rural regions as the primary recipients.Dedicated investment will result in:• A critical mass of place-based rural researchers supported by a funded network creating a rural research knowledge bank.• Close research relationships between the researchers, the primary healthcare networks, the health services and the patients so the impact and outcomes of the research are tailored for, and embedded in, rural communities from the outset.• Accelerated implementation of research results into healthcare and clinical service programs• A more stable clinical community of clinicians with research capability• Better health outcomes for rural Australians• Improved rural economies through stable and sustainable communities
