Nonprofit Organization Management - Newark, New Jersey, United States
Sport Club Português (SCP) is a non profit cultural organization located in the heart of the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey. The club is a symbol of Portuguese tradition & culture, combining past traditions with new ones. In 1920, a group of Portuguese immigrants in Newark initiated the start of a club that not only would facilitate the gathering of Portuguese residents and strengthen friendships, but also honor and dignify Portuguese culture in the United States. Throughout the years, the members of the SCP incorporated various programs in fields such as sports, music and drama, opening its doors to all of the local cultures of the community, creating a bigger home for many over the years. SCP embodies the Portuguese culture through its adult & youth folklore dancing group. Continued education exists through SCP's Portuguese School named "Escola Luis de Camoes," founded in 1930. SCP has also developed a powerhouse soccer program which includes soccer teams that compete on a regional, national, and international level. SCP's youth group is active year round, constantly organizing fundraisers & cultural events. The Literary Department, Proverbo, focuses on the local writers by recognizing their literary works. The SCP Museum houses rare artifacts representing the early years of European immigration to the United States, as well as an extensive collection of dictionaries to short stories.
