Sports and Entertainment Consultation (SECS) is a professional service devoted to helping people function the best they can in their environment. This can mean providing direct services or therapy directly to athletes and entertainers at any given point in time. An athlete will need to negotiate in their contract to make that call to SECS whenever they are experiencing some difficulty. This will ensure that they can always reach out to a professional who can respond to their problem with professional insight and integrity. It also can mean working for change to improve social conditions for the athlete. The phrase "in their environment" points to a distinguishing characteristic of social work—one that sets it apart from other helping professions. The SECS consultant will help the athlete deal with how they feel about a situation and what they can do about it. For example, an athlete feeling stressed stemming from a lack of performance on the team may be counseled by a social worker for introspected feelings. The social worker might also help him explore external barriers with his employer and family and might work with a coalition of players from the team to enable the player to perform with a better-organized framework. Also, the social worker might provide therapy to help him handle the immediate stress. Many of us work for social change, as well. The athlete who is having difficulty in his/her personal life can also benefit from therapy and efforts to curb a media crusade against him. The athlete under duress because of an injury may be emotionally devastated with feelings of distress from fear he might not perform at the same high standards.
