The Sheriff's Office is made up of two divisions comprised of courtroom security and civil process. The Sheriff's Office's core responsibilities include: a) serving court papers (i.e. primarily summons, subpoenas, and garnishments); b) enforcing court orders (i.e. to seize and sell property to satisfy a judgment debt (writ of execution), to restore possession of real property to a landlord or property owner (writ of eviction), to repossess personal property and return it to the owner (replevin), and to apprehend and transport mentally incompetent persons; and c) provide courtroom security for the various court divisions within the St. Louis County Court. Civil Process responsibilities are performed by deputy sheriffs and courtroom security responsibilities are performed by bailiffs.
