Washington College's Starr Center explores the American experience in all its diversity and complexity, seeks creative approaches to illuminating the past, and inspires thoughtful conversation informed by history. We offer Washington College students dynamic opportunities for hands-on learning and off-campus experiences unequaled at other small liberal arts schools. From innovative public history projects...prizes and fellowships...scholarships and internships....and partnerships with some of America's leading cultural institutions, the Starr Center has had a history of making history for over 20 years. The Starr Center also serves as the literal home to the Chesapeake Heartland: An African American Humanities Project. Chesapeake Heartland is a a collaboration between the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington College, and a diverse array of local organizations including Sumner Hall, Kent Cultural Alliance, and Kent County Public Library. Its mission is to preserve, digitize, interpret, and make accessible materials related to African American history and culture in Kent County, MD and beyond.
