Starship NEXIS (New Explorations in Information Science) was a laboratory and research center for emerging media technologies and social web analysis. The center was funded by gifts from Microsoft Research and other foundations. Projects included social data and network analysis, digital content management, 3D printing and scanning, open source hardware, and other technologies not yet covered in conventional academic courses. The team consisted of an elite "crew" of graduate and undergraduate research assistants in communications, computer and information science, engineering, arts and design. Many NEXIS alumni now lead social and digital media initiatives at some of the nation's top networks, Fortune 500 companies, and cultural institutions.
