The institute conducts education and research in the areas of steel production and processing as well as in the application of metallic materials. In doing so, education and advanced training are carried out on a scientificlevel relating to practice.The research is based on fundamental principles and is practice-oriented. Prof. Krupp is new Head of Institute and in co-operation with Prof. Bleck he is responsible for the research field of Materials Science of Steel. Prof. Dieter Senk holds the chair of Metallurgy of Iron and Steel, which investigates the manifold aspects metallurgical process technology of iron base alloys. The Teaching and Research Area for Integrity of Materials and Structures under direction of Prof. Sebastian Münstermann has got its key research area in the field of optimized exploitation of mechanical property profiles of damage tolerant metallic materials.
