Steinway Capital Inc. is a proprietary research firm serving specialized investment research needs of the institutional community, family offices and self-directed individuals. After 10 years in business, we made the decision to not offer asset management services. We no longer have advisory mandates with profit participation or bonus sharing schemes. We believe that this creates biases that are not justified by the strength of ideas, aside from creating lots of internal conflicts at client organizations about the merits of third-party advised investments. In the future, we share our best ideas with the investment public at large, rather than keeping them as privileged knowledge in the dusty coulda-shoulda-woulda drawers of clients. From 2004 to 2013, Steinway served a total of 9 institutional clients under semi-exclusive and exclusive dealings. These clients included such firms as SC Fundamental, Hummingbird Value, York Asset Management, and a group of family offices with whom we worked under incentive arrangements. Our longest client had a duration of slightly longer than 9 years. This client was lost due to natural death. Our next longest client relationship had a duration of 7 years, and 6 years after that. We endeavor to create customers for life with our specialized published research. In at least one case, the customer for life model has proved viable. We stand for the quality of our research products. No company we have ever had in coverage has filed for bankruptcy. We try to have a reasonable assessment of risk and reward when making opportunistic investment recommendations. We do not recommend our clients to cherrypick our ideas or forgo principles of prudent diversification, for there will be times when some of our ideas may not perform well, while others do. We select the companies we like to cover carefully and have a tendency to cover them over many years as they build growing franchises. We advocate low-turnover, long-term investing.
