Street of Dreams is a college bridge program for kids who are wards of the court and in the Juvenile Justice System. It is student driven and provides them the capability to integrate back into society through their participation. Operational since 1998, we have partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education and San Diego City College to serve the students of the Juvenile Court and Community Schools.Located on the campus of San Diego City College, Street of Dreams is a dual enrollment (high school and college) academic elective, for youth who have never had a college attendee in their family. The children we serve are critically at risk, with a growing population and an alarming number going to prison. Through public performance the students are integrated with their greater community. Using a simple method called "Word Art" we link poetry and spoken word to a group who has been without a voice. We have also created a product in order to help raise awareness and funds for Street of Dreams. Proceeds from our $1.00 music video download go directly into a charitable fund that supports the Street of Dreams education programs."We have the highest prison population we have ever had in the history of our country. Street of Dreams is an interactive program that combines the efforts of the Juvenile Justice System, the Public School System and the Community College System, with professional recording artists and business mentors. We are not willing to put another generation of people in prison because we lack the imagination to produce a creative solution. Street of Dreams is a creative solution, and truly a neighborhood partnership."
