Strimillinn is a system for the collection, processing and sharing of pricing data. Its purpose is to open access to currently closed data and information about grocery prices, at first in Iceland and later in foreign markets. The system accepts and processes data from several sources and formats, but at first the focus will be on collecting data from shopping receipts. Consumers can upload pictures of their receipts via e-mail, a website or an app, the system analyzes the data and records what was purchased, at what price, where and when. As data accumulates it will form a unique database of prices in the Icelandic grocery market.Consumers can access the system and monitor their own consumption, the general price level and development of prices. Users also get tips about where to shop to get the lowest prices, the system thus helps them lower their grocery bills while also contributing to increased competition in the grocery market.
