Sulgrave Manor Details

Sulgrave Manor, the home of George Washington's ancestors, was built by Lawrence Washington in the 16th century. Many say that it is the "birthplace of the United States" as in 1602 The Rev. Lawrence Washington was born here. He was an active and prominent supporter of the King on the run up to and during the English Civil War, due to these actions his son, John, found it necessary to seek his fortune outside England. To cut a long story short, a ship wreck, a law suit and a pretty girl (rich of course) led to him settling in Colonial Virginia. In 1914 the British American Peace Committee bought the Manor to commemorate 100 years of peace between the two counties, the Treaty of Ghent having been signed in 1814, the last time that we were at war. Funds were raised on both sides of the Atlantic and it is for this reason that the Manor enjoys a unique ownership as The Sulgrave Manor Trusts holds the Manor "...on behalf of the peoples of the United Kingdom and the United States..." At the opening ceremony in 1921 Sulgrave was described as "...a place from which sentiments of friendship would forever radiate.." Today the Trust aims to fulfill two main objectives. The first being the preservation of the ancient buildings and the second to further educational, cultural and friendship exchanges between the two countries. To this end events occur throughout the year. These include the annual Watson Chair Lecture, the Congress to Campus Dinner and a major Independence Day celebration. - The Manor boasts highly respected education programmes, which are constantly evolving - Groups can visit any day, even outside normal opening hours, by prior arrangement - Private Tours can be arranged to give you a really intimate taste of the Manor - Weddings can be booked to hold your ceremony, reception or both in our warmly intimate surroundings - Birthdays, anniversaries or just having a party - use our Courtyard hall or put a marquee up in the gardens
