Philanthropy - Lenexa, KS, United States
Supporting Kids Foundation was started in 2009 (incorporated in 2010) by a group of dads and neighbors in a Lenexa neighborhood to help a local family whose son was undergoing treatment for bone cancer. We are a 501(c)(3) organization whose goal is to help offset the financial burden to local Kansas City families who have a child diagnosed with cancer. This sets us apart from other pediatric cancer organizations. The majority of other groups focus on funding research to find a cure for this horrible illness but Supporting Kids Foundation helps families who are in the trenches of pediatric cancer right now. Funds provided by Supporting Kids Foundation pay for things such as utility bills, rent, mortgage, flights/lodging when a child needs specialized treatment outside the KC area, specialized medical equipment, and in the most unfortunate cases, Supporting Kids Foundation has helped families afford a funeral for their child. All our assistance goes to families receiving treatment at Children's Mercy Hospital or KU Medical Center, so donors can be assured their contributions are staying here in town. We provide this support primarily through fundraising at our four annual events: a Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament, a golf tournament in June/July, our "A Night for the Kids" auction and gala held in September a Kentucky Derby watch party held in the Spring. These events provide the bulk of our income that is distributed to the families. However, we do also have opportunities available for both corporate and individual partnership support and are always looking to build new relationships with supporters who share our mission.
