Dave fell in love with the water, with Hawaii and with a woman named Keanuenue, who helped turn a pair of cut-off pajamas into bright, baggy, Hawaiian-printed shortsunlike any other. Once they were spotted at the 1964 Makaha International Surfing Championships, their color and comfort soon made them a symbol of freedom and fun worldwide.
