Susan G. Komen: The organization began in 1982 as a promise between Nancy G. Brinker and her sister Susan G. Komen who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Komen has invested $2.2 billion in breast cancer research and community outreach programs, becoming one of the largest global sources of funds fighting breast cancer. Susan G. Komen San Antonio, an affiliate of the largest grassroots organization with the mission to save lives and end breast cancer, has invested more than $16.5 million since inception in 1997. Seventy-five percent of net funds support local nonprofit programs providing vital breast cancer screening, treatment and education. The remaining 25 percent goes to the Susan G. Komen Grants Program for groundbreaking breast cancer research and scientific programs around the world.
