Civic & Social Organization - Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
The present Victoria Swedish Club was founded in 1997, initiated by Hans Hornfeldt who tracked down people with Swedish names.A year after the club was established, a network of Swedish Vikings from the Victoria area elected its first Board of Directors. The Club hosts a variety of cultural events with extraordinarily well prepared Swedish cuisine of up to seven (7) course meals complemented with music, song and traditional dance at Midsommar Afton (summer Solstice on July 21st), Kräftskiva (Swedish Seafood Dinners in September), and Julafton (Swedish Christmas dinner) served during Santa Lucia on or around December 13th annually. The Swedish Club of Victoria also offers language training for Swedes of ALL ages and cultural film evenings to its members and their guests.Today there are more than 100 local Swedish Vikings from the Victoria area who participate at our annual events and the Club encourages those with Swedish ancestry from all over Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and as far away as Port Hardy, Campbell River and Nanaimo, to join in the festivities. The Board of Directors are pleased to announce that starting in the spring of 2016, the Club will be tendering invitations to high-school and post secondary students to apply for our Swedish Heritage Scholarship Award. To see if you are eligible to apply for the Scholarship Award, please visit our website for more information. Join us for showings of new Swedish films, wine tasting, cultural and language training for children and adults, with special guests lectures on Viking Night in October and the list goes on!
