The stated mission of SWOOP is to provide community service through short-term labor and support to meet otherwise insurmountable community needs in a spirit of cooperative sisterhood. SWOOP currently has two programs that serve its mission – SWOOPin' Saturdays and Ramp It Up! The mission of Ramp It Up! is to provide affordable ramps for those in need, to enable individuals to live in their own homes with greater independence and with an improved quality of life. SWOOP also serves its volunteers, predominantly women, by providing them opportunities to learn new skills, build community, and work together to improve the lives of others.SWOOP began unofficially in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran in 1996, which did severe damage to the Raleigh area. A group of about 16 women gathered together to help each other and their neighbors clean up. Long after Hurricane Fran, they continued working together, inviting others to join them, to complete heavy-lifting, one-day projects (SWOOPin' Saturdays) for individuals and agencies in need in their community. For 15 years, SWOOP has continued to provide opportunities for individuals to help those in need and to build community amongst themselves while doing so. SWOOP has completed over 120 projects and coordinated more than 34,000 hours of volunteer labor.
