Insurance - Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
The Sydney Marine Discussion Group (SMDG) has a relatively short history but much like the marine insurance industry, its origins date back for some time.Formed 31 August 2007 following the merger of the previous New South Wales Marine Discussion Group and Sydney Marine Underwriters Coffee Group. Both industry forums are steeped in history dating back as far as 1908 when the Council of Marine Underwriters in New South Wales sought to establish market forums for marine insurance. Their respective memberships were drawn from slightly different bases but with the one common denominator of the sharing of knowledge on the often complex subject of marine insurance. In an era of declining industry revenues and aging workforce, the committees of both groups agreed in 2007 to merge to form the one industry forum in Sydney that would seek to share technical knowledge across a broader industry spectrum than pure marine underwriters. The Sydney Marine Discussion Group membership base consists of people from a wide spectrum of people with interests in the maritime field including insurers, brokers, lawyers, and surveyors. It holds regular monthly meetings with quality speakers drawn from the maritime and logistics industries with the aim of improving the industry knowledge base and networking amongst its membership base.
