Mining & Metals - Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney Marine Sand (SMS) is a privately owned Australian offshore mineral exploration company. Established in 2000, SMS advocates for the development of a new marine minerals industry – one that provides an environmentally sustainable approach to the supply of marine aggregate (sand) to Sydney's construction industry. Sydney has a well-documented shortage of fine sand with onshore sources being depleted every year. As more sand is supplied by road from sources outside the Sydney region, there is significant environmental, economic and social cost. A new industry has significant environmental benefits over the extraction and transport of sand from current or proposed onshore sources. This industry has potential to solve Sydney's construction sand shortage, deliver sand by sea direct to market and remove trucks from increasingly congested roads. Sea level rise and more frequent severe storms resulting from climate change poses a significant risk to NSW beaches and beachfront properties and infrastructure. This risk can be effectively and economically mitigated by means of beach nourishment, which is the best coastal management solution to coastal erosion affecting NSW beaches and a valuable bolt-on opportunity for this project. The company is waiting on a determination on Mineral Exploration Licence Application, MELA-10, lodged in 2012. There is an identified shortage of construction sand for Sydney and a growing need by government and councils to source suitable sand for beach nourishment. Offshore sand deposits offer a viable and environmentally sustainable alternative.
